Healthy Eating & Food Security

What is Healthy Eating & Food Security?

Healthy eating means choosing foods that are good for your health. Food security means that everyone can always get enough safe and nutritious food to stay healthy and active. It's not just about having enough food; it's also about being able to afford and find a variety of healthy foods. When we work to make sure everyone has reliable access to good food, it helps people eat well and stay healthy. This involves making sure food is affordable, the supply is steady, and there are many different types of foods available. We also teach people about healthy eating and sustainable practices to create a strong and lasting food system that benefits everyone's well-being.

What role does Pivital play?

Understanding food insecurity and healthy eating at a regional level is vital for effective interventions and resource allocation. Regional insights help Pivital target approaches tailored to the specific needs and challenges of local communities. Regional data facilitates collaborative efforts, bringing together various stakeholders to work collectively on comprehensive and sustainable solutions. Regular monitoring of progress at the regional level allows for the evaluation of interventions over time, fostering continuous improvement in strategies and outcomes.

A Healthy Hand

A Healthy Hand is a comprehensive food insecurity program developed by Pivital Public Health Partnership, funded by a Community Responsive Grant from the Greater Rochester Health Foundation. This initiative aims to tackle food insecurity and promote healthy eating in the Finger Lakes region, specifically targeting the counties of Wayne, Seneca, Yates, Ontario, and Livingston.

Origins and Community Need

The program's inception is deeply rooted in the findings from community-driven surveys conducted by Pivital. These surveys uncovered a stark reality: 67% of households in the Finger Lakes area experience food insecurity, with a significant impact on families with children. The surveys also highlighted a critical gap for many middle-class families who, despite earning too much to qualify for programs like SNAP, still struggle with the high cost of living and affording groceries.

In response to these needs, A Healthy Hand offers a tailored approach based on community input. The program includes:

  • Personalized Consultations: Families receive one-on-one sessions with nutritionists to develop healthy eating plans.
  • Interactive Cooking Classes: These classes not only teach cooking skills but also include nutrition education to promote balanced diets.
  • Grocery Store Vouchers: To directly address immediate food needs, the program distributes vouchers that can be used at local grocery stores.

These elements were carefully selected to ensure the program is not only meeting immediate nutritional needs but also fostering long-term healthy habits and confidence in making nutritious choices.

The program is set to expand over the next three years, aiming to reach up to 780 families across the region. A phased approach will allow "A Healthy Hand" to adapt and respond to ongoing feedback from participants, ensuring that it remains aligned with the evolving needs of the community.

The pilot phase of A Healthy Hand has already shown promising results. Participating families have reported improved food security, healthier eating habits, and a stronger sense of community involvement. This success underscores the potential of community-driven initiatives in fostering meaningful and lasting change.

Through this program, Pivital continues its mission to enhance access to healthy foods and promote sustainable, healthy eating habits across the Finger Lakes region.
